Welcome! I’d like to take a minute to introduce myself & tell you a bit about who I am, what I do, & what my goals are!
Hey everyone! My name is Alex Bell & I’m 29 years old. I’m medically disabled & work as a freelance writer & advice columnist for teens & adults. I was born & raised in a small suburb of New Jersey. I’ve got 2 sisters & thanks to them, 3 nieces & a nephew. I enjoy watching TV, listening to music, reading, following my favorite YouTubers, & seeking out knowledge every chance I get! I now live in the Mount Pocono area of Pennsylvania. I also have a passion for helping others.
My Freelance Writing Journey
I have been disabled & unable to work a ‘typical job’ since I was only 17. My first job was at Dunkin’ Donuts but I quickly realized that the standing & lifting was way too much for me. Although I did my best to push through & kept trying to make it work, my manager, & best friend at the time, was forced to let me go. I understood completely & just did my best to move forward.
Ever since I was a kid I’ve loved writing. I always aced my book reports & on occasion, even did more than required. At 12, I even started writing poetry right after 9-11. It was the best way I found to be able to express myself. One of my poems was even published, both online & in print. I was always able to communicate well through writing where others struggled. When it came time to decide what kind of job would suit me & wouldn’t be too limited by my heath issues, writing was the natural choice.
Over the last decade I’ve had many writing jobs that I could do from home. Over the years it became much harder to find good jobs that pay any real money though. This started making it impossible for me to live off the money I made as a freelance writer.
I have seen so many people online over the years start their own businesses so they could control their hours & income while doing what they love, so I decided to try it for myself. So now, here I am, with my very own blog & advice column!. It’s like a dream come true!
Why Give Advice?
I have always loved helping others & since I was young I knew I wanted to help people for a living. As a teen, I was that girl who always missed the school dances because she was in the bathroom all night comforting friends. Everyone always came to me because, as long as it wasn’t about my own life, I could always see the situation for exactly what it was & instantly spot the solution that they were too close to notice. I never minded missing the dances though. I was right where I wanted to be! Helping people in that way has always been a passion of mine & I want to keep doing it.
I also want to be available for teen advice. I remember all too well the wild rumors & old wives tales that teens are told & it can be dangerous to believe them. Asking someone in person always feels too embarrassing so I want this to be a place where they can come & ask questions anonymously & get well-thought-out, research-backed answers from an adult who has been there.
We are all too close to our own problems sometimes & that is very normal! I just feel like there need to be more places people can go to get an objective perspective.
My goal is to help as many people as I can to lead better, healthier, & happier lives. Sometimes there is no friend who can give you answers, no relative you feel comfortable asking & nowhere to turn when you need advice the most. There need to be places online where anyone can come & get answers, or just chat anonymously with others who have a similar problem. I would like this site to be one of those places. I will do my best to do the job justice!
